We’re really in the future. Handheld devices, especially smartphones, are being developed with avant-garde features. Samsung gave the world its first folding smartphone that unfolds into a tablet. Nubia, on the other hand, has released a smartphone with a screen on both sides.

These devices are innovative but cost an arm and a leg, which is why a lot of people are not ready to loosen their purse strings. The focus of most of these new smartphones is adding a new viewport. Often, it translates to a second screen on either the back of the phone or on the side.

Luckily, to enjoy the dual screen feature, you don’t have to buy a costly dual-screen mobile phone like Galaxy Fold. Chicago-based inventor Ken Mages has developed an attachable second screen called ‘CastAway’. This is an accessory with ultra-slim screen powered by Chrome OS that supports both iOS and Android mobiles. Currently, the inventor has only developed the device to support Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy variants. These include:

  • Apple iPhone: 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • Samsung Galaxy: S7, S8, S8+, S9, S9+, S10, S10+, Note 7, Note 8, Note 9, Note 10

CastAway is only available through IndieGoGo, a crowdfunding website that markets the device as a ‘Perk’ for funding the campaign. You can ‘buy’ CastAway here. The device ships worldwide!

It’s important to note that this is not a screen extension for your phone, hence, it will not play a movie on both screens. It’s a screen that enables multitasking through a second screen that is connected through the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, through an app called MultiTask+™. Don’t worry about the security since the connection is encrypted.

CastAway can perform a lot of feats but it’s especially helpful when you want to facetime a friend while checking your emails or complete an important task. Now, you don’t have to shell out Rs 1,64,999 for the Galaxy Fold!
